Topographex will be the country's first website devoted to exploring hidden history in the English landscape. We will aim to appeal to both armchair enthusiasts of countryside geography and to walking explorers who enjoy discovering forgotten, vanishing and secret aspects of heritage in the great outdoors, providing a one-stop resource and forum for rural exploration.
There will be contributions not only from Topographex members on the ground but also commentaries from archaeologists and landscape academics – all bringing to life the distinctive character and history of the English countryside through photography, films and mixed-media articles.
You will be able to navigate through historically themed pages to explore lost landscapes off-the-beaten track; ruined dwellings and half-buried remains decayed with the passage of time; vestiges of past human activity, endeavour or industry – derelict and forbidding; scenes of conflict, divinity or folklore – abandoned and overgown. And then get out into the fields and woods to see for yourself!!! Our subscribe-based Topographex forum will mean you can receive specially compiled factpacks and trail guides - becoming a member of our community has plenty of advantages and privileges.
The website will combine striking photography and the highest quality video with evocative and informative texts. There will be archive picture material, engravings and general historical illustration; maps (many specially drawn by contributors), references and information about accessibility along with details of particular walks.
Although Topographex will aim to be a starting point for landscape discovery, the site will also be a portal to the wider world of countryside exploration. There will be selective links to specialist sites, databases and academic study postings – all complementing the ethos of Topographex.
Topographex aims to be a different and unusual rural guide providing an enjoyable and informative on-line resource for education, do-it-yourself landscape detection and fieldwork in local history.
